a life-giving rain

April 11, 2010

One day God spilt into a cloud a dram of the liquor that imparts the
throb and flow of life to the diverse but otherwise still material of
the world. The cloud rained, and creatures unintended and undreamed
began to breathe and shift about. Tatters of women’s hats caught
together and cohered and took to the air, as terrifying and ungainly
as the first helicopters, though somewhat quieter. Pills of wool from
pullovers agglomerated and roamed over the upholstered mountains and
carpeted plains.
It was only a dram. Can they subsist? What will they eat? Can they
breed? Does God love them as much as us? Are we no longer his
newborns, supplanted and taken for granted?
